Christmas Lights Switch On Day

Stony Stratford Christmas Lights Switch On Fun Day

With great regret, the CLASS (Christmas Lights at Stony Stratford) Committee would like to make the following announcement regarding the Stony lights Switch-On Day 2020:

This year due to Covid 19 Stony Stratford will have only a minimal display of Christmas lights and we have reluctantly decided not to hold our annual switch on fun day, which means the street market and the dancing on the High Street as well as the Funfair; WatlingFest and the Switch-On stage on the Market Square; and the lantern parade will not take place (However see below). We would encourage people to come into town and enjoy the lights on display in their own way, through December.

Lantern Making
The Stony Stratford Lantern Project Volunteers are keen to organise some kind of lantern-making experience for our community this year. We already know that the project won’t run in the usual format as there will be no Switch-On Day event, and the traditional workshops at York House won’t be possible due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. It is likely that we will sell ‘Lantern Kits’ for everyone to make their lanterns at home, but at this point we haven’t reached a decision about holding some kind of ‘Lantern Event’.Please join our facebook Group - Stony Stratford Lantern Project - for the latest updates. Let’s keep those lanterns burning.

Let us hope that everything is back to normal for the 2021 Switch-On on Saturday 27th November 2021!

The immensely popular Christmas Lights Switch On Fun Day is held in late November or early December. Stony’s Christmas Lights display, launched with a magical family day of Christmas fun, is one of the best around! Every Christmas Stony Stratford glitters and shines with magical, twinkling lights, and excitement builds as the festive season is officially launched following the town’s Christmas Lights Switch-On Fun Day. During the run up to Christmas, the shops, pubs, hotels and businesses with viewable window space put up window displays, as Stony Stratford Business Association organise a competition for the best window to be chosen by the public. For several weekends during November, you will see a cheerful team of volunteers dangling from ladders, testing light bulbs in trees, erecting trees and lights all over the town and generally enjoying making Stony Stratford look beautiful. During the Fun Day, there will be stalls in the High Street and Market Place all day, along with Morris dancing and other street entertainers, a vibrant fun fair for all ages and our music event, WatlingFest. Each year we have a wealth of local musical talent performing on the stage in the Market Square from about midday to 4.20pm. There is always a good mix of musical genres to meet everyone’s taste. The lantern parade will meander down London Road to the High Street as it gets dark, then the lights will be turned on as celebrations are set in full swing!’

This year's Switch-On Day will be held on Saturday, 30th November 2019.

Christmas Lights at Stony Stratford (CLASS)

Christmas Lights at Stony Stratford (CLASS) organises the Switch-On Fun Day but not the lights themselves or Lantern Parade. CLASS meets 6 - 8 times a year to plan the event. In many ways, this has become much simpler, with lots of the main issues being "same as last year, but not as cold, please". The main work is to organise the publicity, the day's entertainment, manage the finances and to make sure all the "boxes have been ticked". Each committee member has a portfolio covering an aspect of the event.

The Street Market is a major feature of the day and we welcome enquiries from anyone interested in a market pitch. (CLASS provides a limited number of market stalls or tables under cover).
