Stony Stratford Fairtrade Group

Stony Stratford Fairtrade Group

The first Fairtrade banana was sold in 1994. Now 25 per cent of bananas sold in the UK are Fairtrade. Plantation workers often earn less than £1.00 a day. Fairtrade sales can double what workers receive. We can all help make trade fairer.

Aim

The Stony Stratford Fairtrade Group aims to add our voice to others demanding a trade system with people at its heart.
We seek to promote understanding, sale and use of Fairtrade goods locally.

We are working towards Stony Stratford achieving Fairtrade Town status with the Fairtrade Foundation www.fairtrade.org.uk
Supporters include: Stony Stratford Town Council; Stony Stratford Business Association; local churches and schools; individual businesses and residents.

The group runs Fairtrade stalls at various events during the year and works with others during Fairtrade Fortnight (February/March each year) to bring the Fairtrade message to more people. Many people took part in Fairtrade Fortnight 2009: the Brownies made posters for display in the town; children explored Fairtrade in lessons, cooking and through storytelling in school; Wine Rack held a Fairtrade wine tasting; Budgens hosted a ‘Go Bananas’ event; there were Fairtrade stalls at a Methodist Church fair, a St Mary and St Giles Band Concert and at Russell Street School; retailers, churches and schools supported a Stony Stratford Fairtrade Raffle by donating prizes and selling tickets. The raffle raised £400 for Shared Interest (www.shared-interest.com), GEMK (www.gemk.org.uk) and local Fairtrade activities.
